You can have the best technique in the world but without the speed you will never be a successful horizontal jumper fact!
Long jump more so than triple. You'll see a lot of college running backs do long jump because speed is a crucial element in long jump. Look at Carl Lewis, Mike Powell, Dwight Phillips all could run 100m as a pro as they were all 10secs below for 100m. The only amazing long jumper who wasn't extremely fast was Ivan Pedroso and that was because he had the greatest technique and spring in long jump history and he probably can run under 10.6 for 100m.
With triple jump however speed is still important but the most important element is how well you can maintain your speed throughout each phase so the best triple jumpers are the ones who spend the less time on the ground but have an active landing leg to maintain momentum through the 3 phases. The world record holder johnathon Edwards wasn't the strongest triple jumper but what he had was amazing technique and speed (10.2 for 100m) and he never lost much his speed in any of the phases. But In triple jump as its more technical I would say you still need to improve your speed but successful triple jumpers can be good with around 10.5 speed (will claye, phillips idowu, teddy tamgho).
But If your not that fast then I would say you have to have ridiculously good explosive leg power to be good at these to events, even if your not to good at these events just do it for the fun as in my opinion triple jump is the best event in track and field as it you need speed, power, technique, balance and flexibility to be a success.
