I guess when you win 7 times in a row, second place just isn't exciting. The look on their faces on the stage though. Not a single smile or anything.

And your point is ? . . . . .
They were probably very disappointed. So what? They're teenagers.
Get a life.
Their score was 59 at 1k; next best was 149, I think. They just started dropping from then on. Methinks they went out too fast
I'm just commenting on what I found to be interesting. For most teams, second place would be a thrill. For Manlius, it was a total disappointment. That's interesting. Not criticizing them or making fun of them, just commenting. You should get a life, too, if you're so easily offended by message board posts.
Good observation.

Thank you. Honestly it speaks volumes about the program's legacy. They are so good that second place is a disappointment. It's like the Yankees missing the playoffs.
I heard Aris is making them run home because they did not win. Could that be true?
didn't the colorado men come from behind also to win NCAAs?
if I were a coach I would do a lot of pace work to teach my kids not to go out too fast. seems like a no brainer but whatever.
They have learned how to win. Losing with class is harder, but they're young so I can't be too critical. Perhaps the coach can do more work on that piece of their development.
FM got beat by a very good team from Minnesota. They only lost by a few points, and they should feel no shame in that. The better team won today; they better start learning to deal with these kind of things. Congrats to WAYZATA XC!!
I thought the coach's comments from the podium were both respectful and classy. And I saw the FM girls congratulating the Wayzata girls as they exited the podium. Pretty classy to me.
The F-M team handled coming in 2nd just fine. It is unreasonable to expect them to paste phony smiles on their faces minutes after losing. They go into the race under a lot of pressure because of high expectations;expectations based on their history. I'm sure they worry about letting others down. Of course, coming in 2nd is huge and wonderful so they haven't let anyone down. But that is hard to know minutes after the race. Give them time.
Did they insult anyone or otherwise to anything to diminish the accomplishments of the other teams?
No?
Then who cares? If anything it's impressive that they expect such a high level of accomplishment from themselves.
I thought the same thing. I hate the concept of participation medals, but do we need to put this much pressure on kids.

I think I might have enjoyed coming up in a program that intended to win every year. My XC team in high school was more kumbaya and games. The difference between the third place team and the second place team's reactions to the podium was stark, though.

Right. Ever follow HS football?
I believe their dynasty is something to be revered as well as the sheer toughness and unity of this team of girls, which was showcased today despite their coming up short. It is natural for these girls to be disappointed in their second place finish, as they do not settle and always give everything they have for the team victory. The coach and the girls care about each other and run with fierce competitiveness and heart in every race. The way they compete and are able to be an incredible team every year is inspiring and something to be admired. I believe they are a very special program and continued to show that today regardless of falling short of the win, and I am sure they will use this second place as fuel for next year.
I agree that FM is one of the most intriguing stories in high school cross country -- congratulations to them for another season nicely run! Some of the disappointment may have been because a couple of FM's top five appear to have run a bit off of their season best paces, but that's X-C as in life. Once the sting wears off, hopefully they can enjoy their accomplishments. Looks like they only lose one runner to graduation, so it'll be interesting to see what they bring to Portland next year. Good luck to Manlius!

That's kind of their thing. Stotan is a combination of Stoic and Spartan.
Check out stoicism- someone who shows little or no emotion.
