It came down to finishing speed. Too bad Cain wasn't in the mix.

Too bad, but Efraimson just did what Mary couldn't...and as a junior! Cain is not as strong in cross so it would have been close.
Cain would have finished 4th, about 6 seconds behind Baxter
Stop the comparisons already. Mary Cain made the finals of the Women's World 1500. That is the kinds of race for which she prepares, not a high school x-c race. The three top finishers today are all fine hs runners; each has the potential to be a fine college runner and maybe even go further. They are not Mary Cain.

additionally, assuming you just threw cain intot his race with no prep, what makes you think she's in good shape right now? when was her last race? worlds?

What are you talking about? Cain most certainly prepared for cross country last year and the year before. And both times she lost to Baxter.
Not by much if at all.
Keep in mind that Cain really is an 800m runner who moved up to the mile, which shows in her times in longer events. Also, 16:5x on that type of course is something probably less than a dozen NCAAA girls could have run. Cain improved so much this year that she most likley would have won, but it would have been competitive.
Efraimson vs Cain would have been a great race
Not sur that it would have been. Neither would have taken the pace out strong, just sit and try to outkick. Today's race WASa great race, and thanks for that goes to Baxter. Cranny didn't do much to make it, just basically tucked in and tried to steal it
Am I wrong in thinking that Cain and Efraimson will both be competing at World Juniors this year?
I bet if Cain had trained for this she would have won. Baxter doesn't seem to have improved much this year. Cain would have. Plus Baxter won over the mud. A fast course like this and Cain woulda had it.
Not much. 5-10 seconds tops probably. Maybe only a couple seconds in the kick.

False. Cain and Baxter have improved roughly the same amount since last year.
woulda coulda shoulda doesn't make champions

Holy cow, Mary Cain has improved since she ran a 4:04 1500 and a 9:38 two mile?

That's what I was thinking after Efraimson's win. These two and Judd? With all three in good shape, both the 8 and 15 could be up for grabs. I don't think Alexa would be intimidated by either Cain or Judd. I expect her times in the 8 and 15 will be much better in 2014, with good competition and barring injury. Cain's last four races this summer were problematic by Cain standards, especially for someone who was supposed to be peaking for Moscow.

Just like at USA Indoors?
Mary Cain is ineligible to run NXN. One of the standards is that you must be eligible to compete for your high school. So even if her coach had allowed her to train for fall XC, all she could have pursued was FootLocker. Instead, he's too busy messing with her running mechanics. Efraimson had been ruled ineligible by her state after running the Bill Dellinger meet, but was reinstated, so she too was at risk of not running NXN.
NXN website writes:
Eligibility
If you're eligible to compete for your high school team, you're eligible to run in the Nike Cross Nationals.
Individuals may compete as well according to the guidelines noted above. All individuals must compete unattached.

Maybe some people haven't noticed this, but Cain isn't the same runner she was when she last raced Baxter. Her personal bests have dropped precipitously since she started working with Salazar and she's also become a more savvy and seasoned racer. So, while XC surely remains, in comparison to her track racing, her weak spot, that doesn't make her vulnerable to the likes of Baxter et al. on the turf.
Seriously, dickflickers -- how many male high-schoolers do you know who can run 9:35 for 3,200 meters and would have been beaten by all three of the top NXN girls yesterday?
