Ah geez, he's doing it again?? How about running his own da..mn race, instead of enlisting a pacer to hold his hand?? I don't like pacers, whether an 800 or 26.2.
No reason to go with the lead pack whatsoever. Stick to his own pace for the first half, if not more.
The first half, or 30 km of a marathon is actually quite easy and there's no real benefit to "sticking on" any packs. Making up ground in the second half is very easy if you're fit enough to run that fast. You just want to hit your splits and conserve as much energy as possible.
