1. Saucony
2. Mizuno
3. Asics
4. Brooks
5. Adidas
27. New Balance
325. Nike
Nike and Saucony are generally my favorites. Brooks is pretty good too. But I think it's more important to look at the different options for the type of shoe that you're interested in, and see what people have to say about each, regardless of brand. If a lesser-known company makes one great shoe, there's no reason not to consider it.
I love Brooks for flats and spikes and Asics for trainers. I have to admit though I really love the Nike Pro shorts: http://store.nike.com/us/en_us/pd/pro-essential-25-shorts/pid-440806/pgid-437998
I feel like I'm the only person in the world with bad experiences with Saucony. Damn soles fell off on two pairs (very different models). Does no one else have issues with them? As for shoes that have worked, I've put more than 600 miles on multiple pairs of Asics and so I don't bother looking beyond them.
I run in Mizuno and Asics hurt my feet. I have teammates who refuse to wear anything other than Asics. Everyones ranking will be different. I can only fairly rank the brands that I have tried extensively:
For Shoes: 1) Mizuno 2) Nike 3) Asics
For Clothes: 1) Nike 2) Asics 3) Under Armor
As far as under the radar companies - there are a couple of minimalist companies: Inov8 and Merrell off the top of my head
I always buy Adidas shorts because they have been durable. I bought a few pairs of Nike shorts but the seams split rather early - is that why they call them split shorts?
Shoewise, over the last twelve years I have run only in Asics and New Balance due to their availability in wide widths and durability. Holabird Sports always has some good models on clearance. However I have worn all these brands except Mizuno and generally liked them. Etonic was my favorite in the 90s.
1 Asics
2 NB
3 Brooks
4 Nike
5 Adidas
6 Saucony
n/a Mizuno
Usain Bolt #1
I am partial to Adidas footwear, with mizuno a strong second. Bad experiences with asics, Nike and brooks
I have several pairs of Nike shorts (gifts) but do most of my running in Adidas split shorts.
Jersey-wise, I run in cotton Hanes (grey). They give me the least problem with chafing
NB
Nike
I want to like Brooks and Saucony but...
I can't comment on any other brands.
For shoes, you can only rank for yourself. After experimenting with some new models recently, I finally decided I'm never going to buy a pair of shoes again unless they fit well. Otherwise, it's just not fun to run with achy feet or blisters or black toe nails. I think trial and error is necessary because everyone's feet are different.
That being said, our local running store guys say most people like the fit of ASICS the best.
As for clothes, it's hard to beat Mizuno. Their stuff is super durable. I have 4 pairs of Maveric shorts that are 6-8 years old. Only the oldest pair is starting to get weak in the waist. Even the liners are all still in tact and not getting droopy in the legs.
