Exactly. I.e. put yourself in the position of one or the other like the majoriry of NCAA sponsored runners (though I'm in my 30s and out of college)
Well, lets be realistic here. I coach at an NCAA sponsored institution and truth is that many athletes do NOT wear their assigned kits when they are not competing. If you are going to UCLA, you wear Adidas at meets, and if you go to USC or Oregon, you wear Nike at meets. If you are off camera (but you have to be very careful about this if you have a pro contract) you can wear what you want and many do. The catch here is that NCAA distance runners go through a LOT of training shoes, so more of them will stick with their assigned kits simply because they can't afford not to.
I choose Adidas and wear Adipure Gazelle as a warmup shoe but Asics Japan Lite-Ning (I'm a sprinter) spikes because I can't get a pair of Adidas SP Prime (the "Tyson Gay Shoe") in my size (12).
Also, I would say that Nike makes the best spikes ONLY for mid/long distance. Many of the top track guys (VCB, Yohan Blake, Gay--and all of these are sprinters and they wore the Adidas SP Prime in London--are wearing Adidas, as are Geb and Bekele). And you have Bolt wearing Puma, Jenny wearing New Balance, Powell wearing Li Ning, and Wallace Spearmon wearing Saucony because that's who they're sponsored by--off camera, who knows?
