For a mid-distance runner... socks or no socks? and WHY???It seems like most pro distance runners wear socks...

Anything 10 miles and under, I would not wear socks. It just feels faster. I was never really a blister prone person, so I got away with it.
Is it raining? Then no socks. Is it clear? Then socks.
I have never seen socks with spikes
Socks with spikes would feel about as natural as socks with flip-flops.
i really don't think it's ever worth it NOT to wear socks with shoes. for one, blisters. two, the smell. oh god, the smell.
High socks with STRIPES.
Juantorena set the 800 WR with knee-high, striped socks.
Ngugi ran away with the 1988 5000 in his Kenya team-issue, red striped socks.
Marita Koch set an unreachable 400 wr with a modest amount of dope and an invincible pair of standard GDR blue striped socks. Someone may get near that record with dope, but it will take striped socks to break it.

And Jaunto and Koch were juiced to the gills.
Who isn't juiced to the gills? The winning edge was the stripes.
I say no socks. Back in my day (2003-2006), no one wore socks with their spikes. I do see a lot of sock with spike action going on at the track meets I attend now though. Damn kids.

.
NO socks for anything under a1/2 marathon! Socks look silly for racing!
sock spikes is the only real answer op.
glue some spikes to your socks, it will work if you believe in yourself hard enough.
Only WITH SOCKS!!
it depends on what spikes you have. some feel really nice without socks(nike victorys) and some give terrible chaffing(ones with crappy stitching and overlays). but whatever floats your boat i guess.
The only acceptable racing attire there is.
