I always blow out the uppers on my right flats well before the left and end up throwing out the whole pair. Anybody know of any way to just replace the right shoe for cheaper than buying a whole new pair?

you can use either shoe on any foot. You might find yourself having a tougher time with right turns but going left will be easier. Just another example of misinformation we are told and believe.
You clearly have a muscle in balance and need to address.
Assuming you go through shoes fast enough, buy your shoes at a place like DSW or Sports Authority where you have access to the shoeboxes and can put two of the same shoe in a single box. If your right shoe fails, go to the store and buy two right shoes. If there is a substantial difference in wear rates, you will quickly catch up the half shoe difference. If the next shoe to fail is a left foot, then buy two left shoes. You will never be financially out more than a single pair of shoes purchased early, whereas if you made normal shoe purchases you could have a nearly infinite supply of partially worn left shoes.
Easy solution: stop doing marathons on a track.
Sounds like you run the same routes all the time and are always turning left. The guy that said you have a muscle imbalance is probably right. Theres nothing that says one shoe is always going to fail except that one side is doing something way different then your other side.
One other thing. Maybe your foot is to wide for your shoes. Try a wider or different model.
And to answer your question. No, you can't just buy one shoe.
Not advocating theft, but ... swap a left with a right next time you buy shoes so that you buy two rights. Then the next time your right wears out, buy a regular pair.

That is funny. I have heard of people doing that though.
I've worked in a running store for a couple years now and it is actually possible to order just one shoe from certain companies. Not entirely sure which ones do this(hopefully whatever brand you wear) but it's worth asking the staff at wherever you buy your shoes.
Just go to the store, pick out a pair of the shoes, pay for them, and then refuse to take one of them with you.
Find someone with the same size foot who always blows out the uppers on their left flats, and split for a pair of shoes.
Years ago, I remember reading in SI about some football team that had two place kickers, one a righty, the other a lefty, and they both kicked barefoot and wore the same size shoe, so the school only bought one pair of shoes for them.
Talk to a sales rep about buying their samples at the end of the season (this only works if you wear a men's 9 or women's 7).
I have the same problem, but with the left shoe. Its not a muscle imbalance, my left foot is about .25-.3 sizes smaller than my right foot and for some reason tears through the upper on the left front side of most of my shoes. I long for the day when shoes are fitted to feet going down to the tenth of a size.
