This was the message I got from a friend who trains with Salazar. I am not going to repeat who my friend is for her protection. So don't even ask. But this is the report of the workout. 3x 1600 in 4:02,4:01,3:59 with 15 minute rest between repeats.

Steve Prefontaine did this exact workout (3x1600m w/ 15 minutes rest) at the Olympic Village before the '72 5000m.... his times were all in the 4:0x I believe. Alot of people hyped him to win the 5000 after watching that, and it is a great workout, but also a lot of rest. Pre's best mile was a 3:54.7 I think. I'm excited to see what Rupp can do.

I seem to remember him going on to say that he would have been better to do 3 x 4:10 with 2 mins recovery (not exact but times something like that)
He would have been better off running 3x4:10 with no rest.
What did he do for those 15 minutes? That seems like a really boring workout when you have to stand around that long. It also does not seem like that great of a workout. It seems like running a little slower and having more rest would make more sense but hey I don't have an Olympic Medal sitting in my house. I don't really know what kind of times these would translate to. Maybe they are around 10 seconds slower than mile pace? If so that would put him in about 3:52 shape.

went on LetsRun
well you have Allen and Moser.
Allen is injured so doubt she'd be at the workout.
And my guess but out of Erdman and Moser, Erdman is the bigger track nerd.
7.3/10
bekele's 5k world record is 4:03 pace. rupp basically ran that (with 30 minutes of rest)

According to Tom Jordan's "Pre!" biography, he ran 4x 1320 in 3:12,3:09,3:06 and 3:00 tuning up for Munich. In '74, Steve Bence cites Pre's "greatest" session as 2xmile with 5/10 min slow jog in 4:08 and 4:02.8.

Classic Oregon work out.
The 30th Avenue "drill" work out was tougher, imo.
3xmile @ 3k pace with 15 min rest. Not outta this world for Rupp.
Pre did 2 x 4:00 w 10 mins rest

That's a good workout for the mile, not for the 5k.
hey Duck, I think i did this years ago. was taught that it was 3 laps, 4mi, 3laps, 4mi, 3laps, going 3k/5k/10K pace on the first 3 laps, straight into 4mi tempo (or 5sec slower than tempo), then 3laps at 5K, then 4mi at tempo or slightly faster, then 10k/5k/3k pace on last 3 laps. all continuous. bitch of a workout, iirc. thanks for shedding light.
