What makes the marathon the ultimate test in sport?
What makes the marathon the ultimate test in sport?
not certain that it is.
It is a difficult race but every distance is difficult to run at race pace. The marathon is a very long distance, longer than most every training run but run at a faster pace than a training run.
Ultimate? Who made that claim?

You didnt even run the full distance, pansy
An ironman triathlon is an infinitely greater test of athleticism AND endurance
Okay, Paulo.
Being chased down by 10,000+ people. Feeling special to complete the distance nevertheless. Only because an undertrained messenger (in the myth) died of exhaustion after completing the distance for the very first time.
I'm going to go with the guy who made the sky-dive from outer-space as the ultimate test in sport, given people accept that as "sport."
really the ONLY thing that makes a marathon hard is your pace.
Technically, it is not.
But, to the general public / recreational runners.
1. They do not do anything like ironman, ultras
2. When they race at ANY distance, they race at less than 90%
So, that makes other races much more comfortable to them.
But, when running a marathon, even run at 80% effort (Again, for recreational runners), it is very hard.
So, IMO, the term is related to general public based on the above 2 assumption.
Don't know that I'd call it the ultimate test in sport, but the marathon is both reasonably accessible to the average person and perceived by most as something that is very difficult to complete. Most of us will never have a chance to climb Everest or hit a major league curve ball and running shorter distances, no matter how blazingly fast, does not have the same cache in the eye of the non-running public.
