I sure wish that, when they are thinking about doing something, they would ask us first.
What about us who ran the virtual NYCM?
That the Brojos didn't mention us doesn't mean we didn't run.
Pathetic....or my definition of finisher is skewered.
Or their definition of finisher is skewered.
Yes!!!!!! Everyone is a winner!!!!!
That is very selfish of them. Those medals should be going to survivors of Hurricane Sandy.
In NYRR's defense, the marathon will never be run, so what use are the medals? Can they be recycled? If they are going in the trash anyway, they might as well give them away.
It's kind of like the T-shirts they make in advance for both teams in the World Series, Superbowl and so on
There will be douches who wear or display the medals to make people think they ran a marathon, and NYRR shouldn't be encouraging that. However, for non-douches it still might be an interesting curio to have in future years as a memento of the controversial marathon that was never run.
One of the weird things about this sport, and I guess about many things, is that the people who achieve the least want the most recognition and mementos.
I want my goddam poncho!
Take a look at their website, where you can buy official finishers gear (at 50% off). If I needed any more running apparel, I might actually be tempted to purchase stuff at such a good discount from regular prices.
There is actually a good charity that could use those medals.

this.
Making I'm missing something here, but IMO demanding a medal for a race you didn't even run is absolutely pathetic. Am I missing something? Do they make a good paperweight? Door stop?
*Maybe

Why would NYRR need to give refunds?
The runners got to run their marathon in central park if they wanted to.
The only thing missing was the hobby jogger bragging rights for finishing NYCM.
Now they have the medals, they have that too.
Dang! When I clicked on this thread, I thought it was going to be a troll thread. Now I don't know what to think.
I did the Ragnar Colorado relay (one of the worst races and/or relays ever-by the way-don't waste your money) and its one redeeming quality was the finisher's medal doubles as a bottle opener.
part of me feels sorry for Mary W since she is passionate about running and had to endure all of this

nope, they said they won't accept them.
they have to be medals that people have actually earned by completing an event.
Some people actually did run a marathon around Central Park that Sunday. Those people deserve the medal.
