I just want something simple, small, and accurate. I would mainly use it on mileage days and tempo runs to monitor current pace, average pace, and distance. I don't need interval training features, weight, calories, or a lot of data to upload.

I had the best luck with Garmin. Tried the nike for a couple of weeks and it was junk.
I use a garmin etrex vista occasionally to check distance over terrain where using the jones counter is not feasible or convenient.
The garmin is not nearly so accurate, but gives a ballpark idea, usually within a few seconds a mile on flat terrain with only a few curves or turns.
A few seconds per mile is OK.
Also, I forgot to mention the battery life is somewhat of a concern. I'd like to have to not charge after every run.

That was a big factor for me, too. Look at the Garmin FR70. It uses the optional footpod (also tracks cadence) instead of GPS; accuracy is pretty similar. It's rated at a year on a single watch battery. You also get full water proofing, no waiting for a satellite signal or losing it in the trees, etc.

Current and average pace are not accurate on the Vista. It's a handhold, but I think it would be at least as accurate as a watch.
I use it only as a more convenient way of measuring courses, as compared to calibrating the jones counter on a bicycle.
I use my casio marathon watch for all timing, mile splits, pace etc.
The batteries last 6 months on the Vista with very little use. Maybe they would last a week if I used it every day. Their life might be extended by taking them out when not in use, which is quick and easy to do. However I usually leave them in.
Garmin Forerunner 10. End of discussion. Does everything you've described and nothing else.
