They do aid the calf muscles. For me the drawback is the lack of cushioning in the forefoot - I haven't yet found a compression sock that also has good cushioning.
I wear the sleeves which are a great help for recovery. If you feel like you might get a cramp during the run, definitely wear them, but try to wear the sleeves at night to recover after longer runs/workouts.
My calves have never felt better since I started racing in my denim calf sleeves.

Yeah ,I have chronic shin soreness. Long story short I cut up my left calf muscle as a kid and there is a lot of scar tissue so I get sore in that calf very easily.
I wear the Swiftwick Aspire Twelve socks and they make a big difference, especially in the one marathon that I've run as well as during short fast stuff on the track that really beats up my calves. Cuts recovery time and soreness way down
your supposed to poop in them!
OK thanks for the feedback everyone. i'll give it a shot and let you know how it goes (that's assuming i can find someplace to buy them now that we're going to be without power indefinitely from Sandy)
Compression socks by themselves are useless, but if you paint stripes on top, you will be the first to recapture the glorious, world-record-setting power of the 70's and early 80's. That's when all the great athletes wore high, striped socks. Never mind if they're compression socks, what matters is the stripes.
Nobody can break Marita Koch's 400 meter record because nobody wears striped socks anymore.
Try Road Runner Sports online, they have a good selection and a speedy delivery. For calve issues, I would definitely go for the sleeves and like someone said use them doing a race or after a long run for recovery. Socks work well for recovery and traveling afar. Good luck and hope you to get order before Sandy arrives...
