Interesting, so drinking diet soda will increase my 30-inch waist to a 150 inch waist?

Two cans per day = 5 times bigger waist size. It's on the Internet so it's got to be true.
As best I can tell, this is the original study, which, of course, does not contain this ridiculous claim-
http://www.nature.com/oby/journal/v16/n8/full/oby2008284a.html
A lazy or innumerate journalist then created the 500% claim in Prevention magazine, and it then spread on the Internet, although Prevention may just be stealing it from someone else-
http://www.prevention.com/food/healthy-eating-tips/diet-soda-bad-you/obesity
This crap bugs me, but when I went looking to read the actual research, it seems interesting but overstated:
"Controlling for age, sex, race/ethnicity,
education, smoking, physical activity, alcohol consumption,
BMI, daily calories, consumption of protein, carbohydrates,
total fat, saturated fat, and sodium, those who
drank diet soft drinks daily (vs. none) had an increased risk
of vascular events, and this persisted after controlling
further for the metabolic syndrome, peripheral vascular
disease, diabetes, cardiac disease, hypertension, and hypercholesterolemia
(HR=1.43, 95% CI=1.06–1.94). There
was no increased risk of vascular events associated with
regular soft drinks or light diet soft drink consumption."
One study is below, it would be good to see 5 or more independent studies over a 10 year period just see if the result is consistent.

Interestingly, Prevention is published by Rodale, which also publishes Runner's World and Running Times.

No, the thread title says drinnking [sic] diet soda can INCREASE your waistline by 500%. A 500% increase would leave you with a 180in waist.
The nice thing about a waist that big is, if you get really drunk sometime, your friends can just roll you home.
Yeah, if you want to lose weight, just run a marathon and drink a 2 liter of diet coke every mile. That should make your waistline go down at least 2162%
