Is it an ok alternative to buying new running shoes, at least for a while? Mine are worn out but I'm too poor to shell out $120 at the moment.

I actually wear Vibram Five Fingers instead of socks inside my running shoes. I have to buy them up to one-size bigger, but no injuries to report. Especially beneficial in wet and cold weather.
There are plenty of shoes in the $50-60 range that will do just as well. Some of these lower-priced shoes only differ in longevity and not quality. In other words, 2 $60 shoes = 1 $120 shoe in some cases.

Example?
haha. this is a joke, but i like it
I usually buy shoes a half size too big. This gives me room to take the sole out of my old shoe and put it in the new shoe on top of the new sole. Presto, my new shoe is immediatley broken in, and I have additional cushioning.
In the winter I often wear two cotton socks on each foot, but to keep warm, not for cushioning.

In a pinch, check out some of the el-cheapo discount stores (Ross's, Marshalls, etc). In their shoe sections, there are often gems that the usual shoppers don't recognize as good athletic shoes (e.i. not Air Jordans). You would be surprised at what you can run across running-shoe-wise in those stores, but it may take some searching through several of those outlets.

Even though this is a troll thread, I agree with this post. I got a pair of Brooks Adrenaline at Marshall's for 35 bucks a couple years ago. It's shocking, but you can find some good stuff in there.
You should ALWAYS be wearing two pair of socks anyway. Aside from a little extra cushioning, it also minimizes blisters. I learned this trick over 30 years ago.

You could get some of those new double layer socks they just came out last century sometime
I get most of my shoes at the outlet mall. They're all "seconds" because of slight cosmetic defects. Sometimes there's a little glue around a seam or some printing is imperfect. They're priced pretty good. I got a pair of NB 890v2 for $60. They have all kinds of discounts on top the already reduced prices. Basically, the shoes are half price year and they have the most recent models.
Tons of apparel at a huge discount too. And a ton of hot foreign girls.
Moral of the story, outlet malls.

Sock wont help much, you'd be better off with a good gel insert, or most preferably buy a cheaper, affordable pair of shoes at a discount retailer to tie you over until you can afford your 'real' shoes for $120. It also seems to me that your demeanor last night emulated the Democrat mascot. I'm not gonna say the word, but it starts with "J" and ends with "ackass".
