I've always eaten at Subway. Should I step up to Panera Bread?

Yes. Panera bread is godly.

Either diet will kill you. Any and all starch is poison, especially wheat.
Eat an all meat, very high sat fat and high cholesterol diet and you will live forever and never get injured and your penis will grow 6".
This is all proven by science and magic.

Either is good with me
Panera is terrible. They used to be great, but they sold out so that they could put a restaurant on every street corner. The result? All their food is shoddy, pre-made, McDonald's-esque garbage. If you order a bagel, they just hand you a toasted POS with an individual sized tub of cream cheese - like Starbucks. Order the french onion soup, and you'll notice a guy coming out from the back with a "bag of premade soup." He then pours it into the heater-upper to preserve the illusion of freshness.
Do you want to eat bag soup?
I'd say stick with Subway. Yes, it's gross and the FACE of corporate sellout food, but at least they don't pretend to be fancy and fresh. $5 footlongs send the right message - CRAPPY, but CHEAP!
You should try a blind soup test. One of your soups will come from a bag, and the other will be freshly made. Try that 10 times. I wonder if you'll notice the difference? Perhaps the difference is all in your tiny head?

Yes, but that tiny head will grow 6"!
Their baked goods are nothing like a bakery's, and I find most not worth eating. Bagels and flavored cream cheeses are good, esp. if your only alternative is grocery store bagels.
Some of their grilled sandwiches (frontega chicken) will blow your mind compared to Subway quality. Their salads are awesome but overpriced ($7-9), and their soups go great with a side of crusty french bread but cost too much to buy without a combo.
Breakfast sandwiches on their bagels taste incredible.

Maybe for some variety, but it's not a very big step up.
