The great thing about the whole minimalism fad is that the local running stores are now stocking racing flats. It used to be that you would have to go to the store weeks before racing and get them to special order a few different pairs to try. Now they actually have everything in stock and do not look at you like you are crazy when you ask to see a racing shoe.

Your insecurity is showing.
I saw someone a few days ago wearing the Nike Victory that didn't have the spikes in them. They were just walking around on the plastic plate. Baffled me.
Running at the beach yesterday morning...saw a group of about a half dozen rich kids all wearing new Nike Frees in the sand, all carrying surfboards they probably borrowed from the Hollister store they all work for. It was flat as hell, too.
You never know, those 'non-runners' could be former studs. Get out of college, realize there is no future in running, pack on the pounds, and then one day look in the mirror and realize they're fat and need to start running again.
I know a non-exerciser who wears VFFs to help his feet be more functional. It's hilarious to me, but people have their reasons and some are sensible.
I think flats would make a good pair of 'kicking around' shoes for non-runners. They are light weight and usually easy to slip on and off. Also, flats tend to be more colorful and have a 'cooler' look than trainers.
I would rather see non runners walking around in flats than the overweight newbie runner actually running in flats.
