Some great feedback above. I wasn't any type of high school or college runner, but back in 2002 when I took up running, I could wear the Asics 2040s? to the track for some faster stuff and they were fairly comfortable, not so thick that I couldn't get some toe-off, etc. But they obviously grew over the years and I got away from them. It wasn't until late 2009 with the 1140 that I went back to a bit heavier Asics. But these were much more like the 2040s to me.
I actually had went back to Asics in 2008 with the DS Trainer 13 and loved it! The DS Trainer 14 I hated, just didnt' fit right.
Got into the Speedstar 4 early 2010, and this shoe was just absolute heaven to me. Later picked up the 5, which wasn't bad and looked great, but I was able to pick up some more 4s after the 5s came out and wish I'd stocked up on more.
Got the newest DS trainer about 2 months ago and this shoe is nice. It is a bit beefier as mentioned above than the 13 and certainly the 14, but to me the beefiness is in more cushioning. But to me the cushioning doesnt' take away from the ability to feel the trail or road. It's not too pillowy like the Pegasus 28. I guess it would be a slightly beefed-up version of the Speedstar 4 to me. Toe-off is pretty good though. I'm no speedster but Tempo'ing at 6-6:15 pace and they feel pretty good.
Not sure if this helps or not, just some comparisons that you might be able to relate to.
