I know letsrun is primarily track-focused, but if there are any users who know about the long jump, a friend of mine just qualified for state in the long jump, jumping 17'10". She broke the school record. I know that she could easily compete at a lower level college, like an NAIA school, by the time she graduates (if she keeps improving.) I'm not sure exactly how good of a jump this is though.
She also runs an 59 second open 400.
The question is more "how far will she be able to go with this?"
We need more information. Did she do competitive age group track since she was 9? Is she 14 or 15 or 16? Over the season did she jump 17'10" once and her next best jump is 16' 3" or does she have a handful to 17'+ jumps?

The above statement is correct, but by themselves, those are pretty good numbers. They look better if the girl is brand new to track.

17'10" is a good for a 14/15 year old girl no matter how you cut it; in fact, it would be a top 3 performance in states other than TX, NJ, CA, FL, NY, PA, Il, etc. She is about a foot away from the H.S. elite category and/or the type of performance for scholarship money. With that said, if she has been jumping for a while, has good speed and technique, improvement over the next 3 years may only be a foot. It is not uncommon for 14/15 females to jump 19', but they usually top out at 20', whereas it not uncommon for a 9th grade boy to jump 19' and then 23 feet as a senior. Basically what I am saying, young female jumpers don't always improve as you would expect. In fact, some of the best H.S. female jumper didn't start taking the event seriously until their senior year and ultimately became world class.
That distance is good enough to score in almost every classification in every state.
17-10 is an excellent jump at that age. My daughter jumped 18-9x as a sophomore, which opened all sorts of college doors. She then moved into the long sprints, while still long jumping. And because of the strain from running the 400, she never bettered her mark, but got two silvers and a gold at the state track meet. She's now all sprints in college. Moral...if you can add about a foot to that in the next few years, and of course get good grades, the sky's the limit...

That is a good jump and, like you said, should get the attention of smaller schools. Some factors
- an 18' long jumper who does no other collegiate level events won't get as much interest as an athlete who could compete collegiately in multiple events. The 59 for the open 400 needs to improve if it that will be one of her other events.
- is she a short girl who is jumping at her limits or taller? In reference to certain events every single college coach asks me how tall a girl is
- good grades are important and will open some doors for a mid level athlete that wouldn't otherwise be opened.
-how many other girls jump that well where you are located and how many will be seniors when she is. I had a girl jump 18'11" at our state meet and finish 5th. Luckily she was the only senior in the group.
