I've watched her career since her college days and know that she really likes to lead and front run, but to allow free-drafting for the whole race is a different ball of wax.
What could she have done? Zig zag down the road? Surge?

It's pwned, pronounced "powned", you old geezer
Run on fours. Ever tried drafting a dog? Doesn't work.
It's racing. If she ran faster than firewat was able to run than she would have run a great strategy. Instead she got owned. I like front runners but it happens.
Didn't happen to Benoit in 84.
Kim Smith is not a prawn, she's human.

Eh?
yes, I took her down to the pawn shop cos Im a bit strapped for cash at the moment.
Got $100 for her though so it isnt all bad.
It's called racing. She wanted a fast time, the other lady wanted to win. They both got what they wanted.
So then, imagine a race with eight fast people instead of two, like maybe the Oly Marathon. If Kim can learn to be patient and periodically throttle back to conserve resources while someone else in the pack shares the load, which will invariably happen with enough (more than two) competitive runners racing for gold, then hers chances are good.
Someone may counter that she will still be at a disadvantage in that situation due to team tactics (false surges by idle threats)...but at least only three runners per country are allowed.
You keep talking but this'll be a new running fad soon enough

Meant to quote this

Alternative pronunciations are pee owned, pee honed, and pa honed.

I've always written it "pawned" and pronounced it "pawned".
Like getting treated like a pawn in a game of chess.
It's the only way it makes sense. Deal with it.

No it is definitely pwned. As in "owned" but with a p.

No. You misunderstand. I AM CORRECT.
It should be, and therefore IS "pawned".
Goucher looked amazing finishing in 3rd. She going to be a force come Olympic marathon.

Actually, I think she got rooked.....

Right? Nothing like a solid third place finish while looking amazing to let the competition know you are force come the Olympics.
You pick your strategy and you take your chances. You can sit back, force someone else to take the lead in a "tactical" race, but you'd better be able to outkick everyone else if that's your strategy. Or, you can take things out hard, let people draft off of you, and hope to ruin or diminish their kick.
Could Kim Smith outkick everyone in a slow race? Probably not, so she picked a strategy to take advantage of her high level of fitness. She still probably had a better result for her than if she tried to force a tactical race.
