We've been looking at chip timing systems. Does anyone know if there's a bad technology - something that's likely to be obsolete in 5 years? The Jaguar system looks interesting.

It's technology, it's all obsolete...but it all depends on what you want to use it for really
dont waste your money with the jaguar system. it cannot interface with any legit timing software which makes it illegal to use in NCAA, usatf, and even state championship meets.
the system will also never interface with a monitor or vodeio system as a back up, there fore you're screwed when you dont capture reads. the chips are all very cheap and easily erased when put next to a cell phone or even credit card. they have a cheap magnetic charge that never works.
there are a few stores that have it, call them when you ask for refernces. Our owner still bought it because it was the cheapest even though none of the references gave good references. he is kicking himself in the ass now for the purchase and thinkning about dropping 50k for a real system. if you're dihard on jaguar, you can buy yhe chips online and the readers from any rfid dealers. they are super cheap that way and then all you have to do is create or steal the software.
Dont waste your money, even an old and thoroughly used championchip system is 10 times better. most companies that bought the system arent even able to get results for their races the first day. Also, dont buy into anything that Kurt from jaguar tells you...he is a liar and a blatant one to boot. Ask him any direct questions about itnerfacing with runscore, hy-tek, etc and wjhen they will develop a legit camera systems so it is legal to use for actual races. all you will hear is stuttering and stumbling....prepare yourself for the lies.
this system is a lemon at best
