how does a team that had just won ncaa xc with several all-Americans fail to qualify a single individual from the 800m all the way to the 5000m.

They probably don't care about indoors. They'll be flying in May/June when everyone else is fading.
The temperature gets to a high of like 10 degrees throughout the winter up there, along with inches of snow every week. Can't do much hardcore training in weather like that.
Why does everybody care about Indoors so much these days?
I was on two NCAA Cross Country championship teams and we never had anyone qualify for Indoors. That was a while ago and we really didn't try. We didn't even go to last chance meets if we were a second or two from qualifying.
That was then though, you would expect some of them qualifying but maybe they were a little beat up focusing on the team cross title and need a little break. As opposed to mid-distance guys who didn't crank full bore in cross country season and are running sub 4:00 and sub 8:00 in February.
Looks like Hatz could have been in the mile if he had chosen to; his 3:58 would have been enough, but I'm guessing they want him fresh for the DMR. Mellon and Mudd are also on that DMR team.
Ahmed didn't run all indoors, so he's either redshirting or injured. Darling, Conner, and Krause ran some credible times at Tyson and Big Tens. And the Badgers are hosting Big Ten Outdoors this year, so I'm guessing Nutty will want them focused on that.
First, it gets way warmer than 10 degrees during the winter, especially this winter with highs in the 30s and 40s on a lot of days.
Second, Alex Hatz qualified in the mile, but looks like he is only doing the DMR which ran an auto time of 930 last weekend.
Third, Mo Ahmed red shirted indoors, who would be a definite qualifier in the 5K.
Fourth, after so much energy, both mental and physical, that goes into a national championship cross country season, they probably needed a little down time. Look for them to be ready during outdoors
Where you a D1 runner, because if this is so D3 joco nonsense your opinion is not welcome here!
We all know that the D3 runners don't care about indoors...

Well yes I was a D1 runner for a program that has won 5 NCAA cross titles. I ran on two of those.
Our coach was totally against too much quality in between cross and outdoors. We didn't step on a track until mid-March unless it was to race. And the only reason we did that was because of Indoor conference.
We went at it pretty hard in cross country since we expected to challange as a team every year. And a lot of us raced late in the spring/summer in track with NCAA's, US Nationals, Olympic Trials when they came around. It was the viewpoint then that you couldn't hold that edge for 10 straight months. So Indoors was de-emphasized for distance runners.
Not going to Washington was a signal that they weren't all that interested in the NCAA indoors.
Darling and Connor ran well at Tyson in the 3000, but the incompetence of the rabbit made a qualifying time impossible.
They didn't run all that well at the Big Ten's in the 3000 and 5000.
Strange stuff.
This is an olympic year. I think a lot guys are planning on a prolonged outdoor season. Ahmed has legit shot of making the Canadian team if he can achieve the A standard. OSU also has a smaller than usual presence at indoors.
Really? When was the last time OSU qualified so many?
If they dont care about indoors then why did Collins, Krause and Conner go to the last chance meet at Notre Dame??

The biggest disappointment had to be reed conner after winning the big ten 5k outdoors closing in 54 and a great cross country season, i thought he would be running 7:48ish by indoors. so to see him struggle to 8:00 3k last week was a surprise.
I don't want to hear about the OLYMPIC YEARS or the TRIALS even. Coaches like Dave Smith, Mick Byrne, and many others unfortunately get a ton of America's best talent and gear all preparations to cross country and there is nothing left until summer training for cross country rolls around!

Badgers? Badgers? We don't need no stinking badgers.
Indoor is a joke!. I mean it a season to prepare for a season.
It like those kids on the team who race the warmup.
Indoor does have its place and its purpose but it is nothing compared to outdoor.
I applaud those teams who are smart enough to de-emphasize the indoor season so that they can run better by outdoor.
FACT: Many if not most people who do excellent in indoor will fade in out door. Look at the list of those who don't.
It makes sense for people who feel like they don't have a legitimate chance to win in outdoor to go for the indoor win.
They will be crowned a national champion. But to those who know what is going on, we know you just handed out a trophy for nationally huge mistake in training, or national winner of the warm up. They might as well go and win a road race.
Anyone who wins in indoors but not outdoors needs to re-evaluate their coach and their training.
You could get 6th place in outdoor and that would mean more than 1st in indoor.
Congrats to the badgers!!!!
I couldn't agree more!!!!
Indoor needs to be de-emphasized by coaches.
Indoor is like the preseason.
Who cares in the NBA which team has the best record during the preseason!!!!
I don't know why so many coaches burn out their athletes during indoor.
Galen was able to pull of the indoor and out door victories.
I can see Lawi doing the same thing.
I just don't see people like Miles Batty pulling off an indoor and outdoor double.
I hoped that batty would coast indoor and have an epic outdoor season.
He will probably hit some sweet times in april. However may he will start to feel it. By July its over.
Too bad!
I wonder who will take the crown of best miler in college when it really matters. Which miler has been playing it smart?
Disagree. If you have good coaching, you'll make it into indoors with out having to emphasize it... See Galen Rupp
Y'all have to admit Indoor is still fun to watch. You have great competition with superb athletes in great shape. Even if the prize at the end of the day is equivalent to what you get in a happy meal.
