Absolutely 1:43, this guy is a boss. He's gonna win USAs the way he's looking. Solid amount more strength and more mature. I'm sure his speed might improve a little, but that strength is gonna help him the last 150m when he holds off KD and Symmonds ftw.
That time is piss poor for a runner of his caliber.
Is it mislabeled as a 1500? Times seem SLOW. Or maybe there were 30 MPH winds or something?
3:53 in March? Lord have mercy!
Maybe you should remember that Jock was a 400 meter runner who moved up to the 800. Without a lot of a distance background, this time is perfectly fine for someone of his calibur. On the flipside, didn't Jock split 44.x last year in the 400?
It was not a mile so what is the big deal? Or was it a mile....if he ran a 3.33.44 then I would be like ooooohhhhhhh ahhhhhhhh Jock can challenge Gray's record with his speed and that mile strength.
you should probably put 1500 in the title, i thought this was a mile. there is nothing thread worthy about a 3:53 1500 for a collegiate runner who made a worlds team.
Jock is a 400/800 runner, I believe he's said before that the longest he runs at one time is 30 minutes or so. The guy has 44.X relay speed, I think this improvement in his strength will go a long way.
The time is impressive unless he is a 800m runner considering he a pure 800m runner and not a 800m/1500m runner. The 800m is slightly more speed then endurance; therefore, there are two different type 800m runners. One who trains slightly more like a 400m runner and those that come slightly from the 1500m type training. Charles Jock speed and front running is a evidence that early in his career he is more of a speed runner who is working on his endurance.
The fact that he won by over a second may prove that he was within himself and could have run faster had needed to then 3:53.
Oh goddamnit Coach D. I thought this was a mile and Jock was about to challenge for a gold medal in London.
You can't compare Jock to the typical 800/1500 runner.
Figure his 800m best will be ~2.3 x 4x400m capability while
a solid 800/1500 guy will be more like 2.2 x 4x400m capability.
2:20 1000m/<3:50 1500m is about all Jock needs on the stamina side, and does anybody really cares what Jock does for 5000m?

Oh shit, does he really have 44.x relay speed?! If so, okay, now I get thinking an early season 3:53 win is a good sign. For 99% of 1:44 800 runners it wouldn't be a good sign, but if he is that fast, that's a different story.
(okay, just looked it up, the coach say he split 44.x once. His open best is 46.3, so not sure if he really ran 44.x relay leg, seems a possible stretch. Coe could run 46.x open, correct? And Rudisha can go 45.x. Borza 45.x I think. And all those guys, especially Coe of course, were much stronger endurance wise than what jock is showing with that 1500. So I am a but surprised he can already run 1:44. He needs to get a little stronger at 1500 to really become an international star. Or maybe he is capable of 44.x relay legs, and well, that's fast. )

Exactly. He should stop wasting all that time with weights and speed training and just build his base!
If he really wanted it, and if he was really tough enough, he would move up to the 1500 or maybe even the 5000.
Remember the kids, 1:44 and a USA singlet are nothing if you can't bang out a 50 minute tempo run.
Great subject line tease!!! That's about a 4:11 mile.
4:02.21 *Edward Cheserek’ (St Benedicts Prep, Newark, NJ)
4:12.56 Nicholas Christensen (Veterans Memorial, Peabody, Ma)
4:13.13+*Ben Malone (Pascack Valley, Hillsdale, NJ)
4:13.70 Craig Engels (Reagan, Pfafftown, NC)
4:13.83 Zavon Watkins (Liverpool, NY)
He would move into second place on the 2012 HS list.

Why stop there? If Jock had run in the HS Footlocker XC race in San Diego, he wouldn't make the top 100.
Get back to your base Charles! Become a real runner!
Apparently you didn't see the Big West Champs 4x4.
he ran 3:57 last year at this meet. so 3:53 is a decent start to his season. and yes charles jock did split 44:xx at big west last year! guy is a 400/800m guy!
I cannot believe this is even being talked about...clearly Coach D is charles jock best friend, nobody is impressed by this.
Charles Jock rocks opening with a controlled 3:53 personal best and slashing 4 seconds off his pb. Last year he ran 1:44 mid so this year 1:43 is certain...rock on Charles!!!
