Garmin FR 60, only a hundred bucks or so. It's a footpod device, not GPS, and so won't let you map your run but will generally give you better pace information and also cadence, if you are interested in that. No waiting to find satellites and no distortion between buildings, etc. Also the FR 60 is smaller than GPS watches and fits like a regular watch.
Here's more than you need to know about running watches:
The Garmin Forerunner 610 hands down. But since you just want something to tell you accurate distance and pace then Forerunner 110.
The best garmin is NO garmin!
I swear, it makes me want to puke my guts out after every single race when all these morons start talking about how the course was long..."according to my garmin!"
You need to take your garmin, tie a large boulder to it, and throw it in a large, deep lake.

Me tough guy...me no garmin!
I use the 210 because it has the "current pace" option which the 110 is not supposed to have.

No. The individual using their Garmin like that should be thrown in the lake without it. I'll take the Garmin and use it to be able to go for a long run through the park on some random route and still have a fairly accurate idea of how far I ended up going.

Same here. If you don't care about looks and size, you could also go with the 205/305. I would strongly advise AGAINST the 405/410 series or the 6xx. When you're on a run, the last thing you want to worry about is a touch bezel or screen. You want good old fashion buttons, that work reliable at any pace.
Good reviews.

No, if you wear a garmin, you are a nancy. Fact.
I agree to not get the 405 series. I have the 610 and the thing is sweet! No problems with the touch screen and very easy to use. Paired with the HR monitor it's pretty interesting to see how you're body reacts during workouts.

I only played around with the 610 in the store and couldn't help but feel someone loves the iphone and wanted to apply the same concept to a watch. The result did not impress me. Again, when you're running 6min/mi tempos you don't want to play on the touchscreen at the same time.
On a related note, I also never understood folks running with an iPhone/iPod Touch, or the new Nano. Fast running is what the Shuffle is for.

Excellent Reviews. Thanks for this link. I especially liked DC Rainmaker's analysis of the different Calorie Burn algorithms available.
Everyone who uses a sports watch should bookmark the page.
I have the 110 because I got it as a gift but I would go with the 210 because of the extra features. I find the touch screen ones very frustrating to use.
I have the Forunner 110- I love it, my only issue:
After about 3 weeks the start/stop button broke. They replaced it, but I had to pay to mail it back and had to wait 2 weeks to get a new one.
THEN- after about 4 weeks with the new one, the reset button broke. I use this thing only to run and some days I don't even wear it for that.
I hardly used the rest button (it resets itself), I'm not rough on the watch at all.
I emailed back again and am waiting for a reply.

Nutsy, why do you have to play on the touch screen while you are running? Can't you use the auto scroll to get through the screens? On the 610, you can set alerts and even have it vibrate for you every mile! You don't need to touch the watch while you are running other than to start & stop. The bad boy just gives you feedback when you need it.

So it broke twice and the customer service is crap. Love it!
I suggest you wait for the new Garmin 220 or 620 which is coming out in December. They both look like significant improvements on current models. There are some early reviews out there if you google.

They look nice but would not use most of the functions
Do the expensive Garmin's or other GPS devices actuallly pick up the signal when you start your run any quicker than the cheap ones?
Not sure which ones you are referring to with the "Cheap" ones, but current models of Garmin and NIKE/TomTom are quick to pick up satellites, as long as they are charged up. My NIKE is slow if more than 1/2 discharged.
Might note that you can lock out the touch screen so you don't accidentally change it while running, like with long sleeves pushing up and down. I personally like the 610 screen better since the numbers have a bolder font and makes it easier to read on the run for these older eyes. Don't know if I'd use the ability to change the settings DURING the run, to any advantage.
Oh, and the Garmin customer service is VERY good. Unfortunately, sometimes you just have to send a watch back, but that is just a risk you take when buying one. If you had just bought one within a couple months, take it back to the store (another reason to buy local instead of ordering online).
