about 6-8 weeks after first run
Please don't tell me you're asking this, and that you're telling him to replace them after 6 to 8 weeks, where does that information come from? I run 60 miles a week on average, and I haven't bought shoes for at least a year.

i don't think it's really good to have more than 3000 miles on a pair of shoes. usually you replace them between 400-500 miles
It really depends on the individual runner's economy. My coach gets around 1,000 out of a pair, but he's quick, light frame, low weight. Another guy on my team, about 6 foot 2, 170 lb, replaces around 400-500. I'd say most runners are in the middle there. I'm pretty efficient and light (130 lb) and I usually replace around 600 miles.

Also depends on the shoe. I run in minimalist shoes. I replace them when the upper tears away from the sole. That has been 2000-2500 miles on the last couple pair. Could probably get a lot more out of them if I ran on roads more but the trails tend to put a lot of stress on the uppers as your foot slides around a bit.
