I'm in my mid 20s. Back in high school, I ran a sub 2 800, and my speed was good enough to consistently run in the low 50s for the 400. College and work came in, and running gradually dropped off. As of last week, I haven't run a step in 3 years.
Around lunch yesterday, a discussion about sports came up and someone said that he might be the fastest guy in the office. The thing is, he wasn't a track star or a football champ. He played ultimate frisbee.
So I took him on. Yeah, I haven't run in years, but surely I won't lose to a frisbee player. Right? And while my endurance would have been totally gone by know, I figured my 2006 speed would still be there.
Long story short, I got dusted in a 100 meter race and finished more than 10 meters behind. And the guy was wearing pants. Ugh.
But maybe I didn't warm up right or had a bad day. So today, I hopped in an all comers meet and ran the 800. Now you wouldn't be surprised if I said I lost, but I lost to a kid who couldn't have been more than 10 or 11 years old. For the record, I finished in 2:25.
Thankfully, I did manage to have a glimpse of victory later in the day. As I was about to leave, I found that a 4x400 team was in need of a runner to replace someone who got injured earlier. So I volunteered. Despite me running the slowest split in the team (it was ~60-61 seconds), we finished a respectable second place. And yes, there were more than two teams in that race.
Any other stories?
