Suggest a replacement/subsitute for Asics 2160

Eclipse will be too much stability. I would either drop down to the DS Trainer or the Brooks Ravenna. If you want to try a Nike, the Zoom Elite returns this Holiday season.

I used to run solely in the 21XX series, and then last year switched to the Brooks Ravenna. I like the Brooks a lot. I just picked up a pair of 2160s from DSW because I really needed a replacement shoe and I was near the mall, and I have to say that I now prefer the Brooks.

I also have run in the DS trainer, and I think they are another good choice, but for my daily runs I favor the Brooks.

the LunarEclipse is a more supportive shoe than the 2160. If you want something similar, try the Saucony Guide, Mizuno Wave Inspire, New Balance 860, Nike Zoom Structure, just some examples. If you want a lightweight shoe with some stability in it, you could try the Asics DS Trainer, New Balance 870, Saucony Mirage, Mizuno Elixir, others.

All through college I wore the Asics 2100 series and the Brooks Adrenaline. I liked the brooks better though. It seemed like I got more miles out of them.

Books ravenna or brooks adrenalines. Either one is a great option.

NB 890 is a *maybe*, but with no medial post and too much room in the toebox you might find them too flexible for your feet.

The new zoom elites are neutral, not the same as the old ones.

Like others have said, if you like the 2160 but want something lighter, try the DS Trainer, Brooks Ravenna, Mizuno Elixer, Nike LunarElite (or Zoom Elite when it comes back), or Saucony Mirage (if you want something flatter as well).

The old ones had a stability post, it was smaller than a normal stability shoe, but it did provide some correction. The new Elite has an internal Dynamic Support, which is Nike's internal stability system.

The new Zoom Elite 5 does not have dynamic support. The 'support' comes from a unique upper that wraps the foot from underneath the strobel board, similar to Pearl Izumi's lacing system. It does not offer any true stability, with the exception of having a fairly high arch profile. The name of the new lock down lacing system is escaping me.... but this is now a neutral shoe.

Hey. I started running with the 21 series back years ago until around 2130 i started getting blisters.

Used to then love the adrenalines as well. But I met a new love: the Ravenna! Still pronation protection, still good cushioning with a little less weight and a good bit of extra flexibility.

You should give them a try.

I transitioned from the Asics 21XX line a couple of years ago and don't regret it. I think I started out by rotating the 21XX with Mizuno Elixir. I then rotated through Brooks Ravenna / Elixir and I'm currently rotating Mizuno Precision with Brooks Pure Flow. I haven't seen a lot of difference between the lighter stability shoes and the neutral Precision.

DS trainer would be a good option to start with also.

Brooks:

- Ravenna gets many votes, I tried them at JackRabbits and they did the job, just like Inspire and 2160. So I might get a pair

- Adrenaline: never tried but you guys seem to like it

- Pure connect sounded like a good idea but doesn't seem like anyone use them (yet?). Why?

Nike:

- LunarEclipse: "will be too much stability". OK. When I tried them on, I loved the feel except for the tight ring I could feel by the ankle

- LunarElite: aren't they too neutral?

- Zoom Elite / Zoom Structure: don't know these

Asics:

- DS Trainer (more performance based): will skip for now, I remember feeling like they lack thread (i.e. my feet burned). Also I don't plan on speedwork or tempo for the next 3 months as I try to build my base.

Mizuno

- Wave Inspire is real substitute, they'd do

- Wave Elixir is like DS Trainer, people like it a lot, I never tried and may give it a shot

Saucony

- Glide

- Mirage (like Elixir/DS Trainer)

NB

- 860

- 870 (more performance oriented)

Adidas

- Supernova Sequence

Question: does rotating shoes of different brand help with injury prevention? I used to run either 3,5 or 6 days a week (mostly 5) and now I want to run 7 days a week with no real hard workout, to build a lydiard style base. Hence I am afraid of little overuse injuries since I will do a lot of my runs in the same speed range. I will vary terrain and running surface, and obviously via this post I hope to add 2-3 pairs to rotate. I will not switch out of 2160s completely as they are ok (no major injuries, tons of little nagging aches/pains only).

I used to run in the 21## series and the Nike Structure Triax, but have switched to the Nike Lunar Glide and the Nike Lunar Elite. Similar to you, I need something in the middle of stability and neutral. Also try the Saucony Guide.

Everyone here seems to sing praises for Brooks, but I've never had a pair that worked well for me, and I've tried the Trance, Adrenaline and the Ravenna.

I've always wanted to try the Mizuno Inspire (they may feel the best in the store), but the hallow section under the heal looks like it would collect a bunch of ice/snow in the winter, and I've heard Mizuno has durability issues.

Like other posters, I used to run in the 21## series. The 2110s were probably my favorite shoes of all-time but then, one or two models later, they became way too bulky and really messed up my running stride and my achilles. I switched to the lighter 11## asics trainer, which worked well for a while until my achilles problem came back. Lately, I've been doing about 90% of my mileage in adidas adizero flats. I've been wearing them for around 8 months, with no major issues, although my mileage and level of commitment are lower than they used to be.

This probably doesn't help the OP, but I just wanted to vent my frustration over Asics ruining a great shoe series.

- Brooks Pure Connect is nothing like the 2160. It is not posted and there is significant less drop (4mm vs. 10mm in Asics). If you want posted you may want to look at the Pure Cadence.

- DS Trainer has become more cushioned throughout the last years. Maybe you wore the one right after they switched from SPEVA to SOLYTE. SOLYTE has gotten better but is still not as good as the good old SPEVA.

- Mirage (4mm) has significantly less drop than Exlixir (12mm) or DST (10mm)

My bad I meant the Pure Cadence, the one with stability features. Any insight on that one? The ad material seems pretty exciting, but of course, it's just advertisement.

I tried them on at a store and since I have mid-high arch it felt pretty good, but I haven't run on a treadmill with it to assess overpronation
