All hail the might Clan McGregor!
I think this was my favorite part.
"I like America and I'm glad I was born here, but I don't see any reason why we need to win marathons. If you're rooting for American marathoners, you're rooting for dozens of Kenyans to come all the way to miserable old Boston just to lose a race. What have the Kenyans ever done to you? This is their thing; our job is to host them and admire them and force them to eat pancakes in our elementary schools."
"As it happens, Emily is a devoted follower of American marathoning. She is particularly fond of a dashing young fellow named Ryan Something, who seems to excel at arranging his hair and waving to the crowd after he loses marathons. "
"Distance running is an absolutely riveting spectator sport..."
lmao
This is absolutely hilarious.
another great quote wrote:

Haha that's epic.
That is an awesome article. Great perspective. Quotes good for a laugh.
Thanks.
"But I found it hard to root for this Ryan or for the female version of him who threatened to win before falling apart at the very end when she remembered that she was not, in fact, from the part of Michigan that is in East Africa."
Nice Desi reference.
I thought the Michigan reference and some of the other remarks showed the writer has perhaps a greater familiarity with the sport than he was trying to convey. Could be he just went back and googled stuff but I wonder if the writer is a closet runner.
as a recent boston area college grad and d1 runner, it doesnt get any better than marathon monday in boston. people that dont even like running get wasted and cheer on the thousands that run by and then continue to party all day, simply because they get the day off from school.
I've gotta give the guy some props for being a great runner. These are the two best paragraphs.

He said his girlfriend or wife followed marathoning. He probably was told about it.
This guy is a beast
England hasn't won a world cup in the post-colonial error.
Brazil is the Kenya of Soccer.
They should quit kicking around their balls and play a real sport. Like football and baseball.
