The current system is put into place to try and get the best teams into the national meet. That means that teams have to prove themselves during a specified time period against teams from around the entire country.
There have been problems in the past where a team that did their job and scored "points' were beaten by a team that was peaking at the right time. The "one-time blocker rule is put into place. Time will tell if this is a good change that rewards teams that are peaking at the right time or a bad rule that rewards teams that are going down hill fast. Time will tell.
If your team is good enough to make it to nationals they should be in the top 2 in each region. Then their is no waiting, no worrying at all because you know. After the first 18 auto teams the next 13 teams are chosen by way of a very specific set of rules that anyone who wants to can follow. Each year someone posts that teams that will be going to nationals on this board well before the Monday conference call when it becomes official.
The selection process is objective based on a set of rules. Most Sports have rules that need to be followed.
I have one major sugggestion for helping the current system be more effective. Let the pre-national meet run a seeded race of 45 teams. Then head to head, mano a mano competion will decide which teams get points and who will be going to nationals.
