John and Bob like to race 3 different distances: the 400m, mile, and 5 mile. John ALWAYS beats Bob in the 400m and the 5 mile as he is a better runner at those events; is it physiologically possible for Bob to be a superior miler (right now)?

not likely
In that case, change the shorter distance to 100m, and the longer distance to a marathon. In other words, if I've got you in the 100 and the marathon, do you have any hope at any intermediate distance? Say I have more natural speed than you, I run a 12.5 vs. your 13.0. You do a lot of mile-specific training while I train exclusively for the marathon. Does that change anything?
What is the purpose of this question? Not sure who in their right mind would pick the slower person in the 400M and the 5 Mile race to WIN the mile race. Please explain yourself.
Possible, depending on how close they are. I could beat a teammate from mile down, he got me in the 3k, steeple. 5k we were even, 10k+ I had him every time.
How very UNinteresting.
