During college I ran in heavy neutral/cushioned shoes and only used anything light for faster runs. It worked and I didn't get injured but I always preferred a lighter shoe. I wanted to start using them for most of my mileage but didn't want to take the risk for injury.
After a year off due to injury (not running related) I am slowly building mileage. By slow I mean starting out at <5mpw and taking over a year to build back up to 80. Since my mileage is so low I thought I would take this opportunity to switch to running in a lighter shoe. I'm running in asics bandito, listed as 7.9oz
It hasn't worked out that well so far. I'm 2 months in, only running 10mpw, and already had to start using my old asics nimbus because of heel pain. It hurts on the inside of my heel (not the bottom) whenever I push off with my toe. I can make the pain go away by rolling off the outside of my foot. I still feel it with the nimbus but it doesn't hurt too bad. Stretching before helps too.
So my questions:
How often do you run in lightweight trainers?
Does the heel pain sound like plantar fasciitis or something else?
Is it worth trying to make the transition or should I give up and go with the heavy stuff?
