I thought it was impressive enough to get a thread. Klech of Oregon finished in 4:06. Mike Morrison of Cal finished first overall in the competition.
Congrats to all of these guys. They put in some hard work.

great runs. but remember, they had a full nights sleep and refueling unlike a normal dec.
Beach is #2 all time in the 1500 for a decathlon over 7000 points. Klech is 11th
Wow looks like Beach came in 2nd overall. I bet that will shut the kids up who want him to be a full time mid distance guy.
It was nice to see the Cal senior, Morrison, win this thing. He has been second fiddle to Ashton Eaton for a few years, but he hung in there to finish off college in grand style. The redshirt freshman from Duke, Curtis Beach, showed what we all felt was his potential--and will undoubtedly do a lot of damage for the next three years. Also, was nice to see Oregon's Klech finish off his college career with what would normally be an eye boggling 4:06. Congrats to all the decathletes in this most grueling event.

This is true. Give them an * in the books but also give them a pat on the back.
Second overall is HUGE after his struggles last year. 10.78,46.90,3:59....righteous!
The decathlon requires the event finish in two (calendar, I think) days, so these scores will likely not count as 'official'. Further, the marks in the 1500 are much faster than normal and will not be recognized as top marks for the event; maybe they will carry an asterisk or something.
and it looks like weak throws were what kept him out of winning it all. If he just had 5-10 more feet in the jav, he could have scored the 35 points he needed to win.
Is Morrison the same guy who vaulted well over 17 feet in high school in Virginia 4-5 years ago? I know there was a 2nd Mike Morrison who was a college track star (can't recall what events) and I get them confused.

I know Florida had a Mike Morrison who jumped 7'5" something a few years ago. The Morrison you speak of is the same one.
yea i remember that. i want to say he vaulted 17'7 -ish in high school. he went to florida and transferred to cal
Apparently Miller Moss ran a leg on his team's 4x400 just 30 minutes before the 1500. Think that cost him the ~14 seconds in the 1500 that was the difference between 2nd and 3rd?
We caught up with Beach after the race and asked him if prior to his 8,000 point performance today if he'd ever thought about giving up the Dec to simply be a mid-d runner.
He said no as while he's always loved running, he loves the other events as well.
We then asked him if he'd at least consider running xc in the fall and then doing the multi in the spring to gain the acclaim of the LetsRun.com nation.
He was pretty funny in his reply. He said he loves running but crushed the LRC faithful by saying, "My days of cross country are over."
He did say ultimately he hopes to do a 20-even multi that includes a 5,000 and 10,000. Now that would be awesome.

They were in heat 3 of the 4x4 and 15 minutes later they started the 1500.
He split a 51 in the 4x4 and really labored through the 1500. Why wouldnt the Clemson coach put in the 5th best guy on the 4x4 and give his man a shot at the victory? He was down 60 points. At least let him go for it.
Florida had two by the name of Mike Morrison. The outstanding Pole Vaulter who transferred to Cal and another Morrison who was a many time all american on relays and in the field. Sort of a precursor to Christian Taylor.
The whole morrison family are amazing athletes, one is a pro baseball player, the other is NCAA champion, and the other is just starting in college in track. [quote]old coach man wrote:

I know Mike from high school. He holds the Virginia AAA state meet record for the pole vault- 17'9", I think. His high jump PR is just over 6.5 feet.
He went to Florida and was on the team with the "other" Mike Morrison. The new national champ transferred to Cal after a series of coaching changes at UF. He was forced to red shirt two years ago after having elbow surgery.
I'm pretty pumped to see the improvements he made since then!

That 10K must be a death fest.
Joe Detmer ran 40:27 for 10k to finish his double decathlon world record in apparently 90 degree temperatures. It would be tough, but I bet Beach could gut out a 36-minute 10k at the end of a double dec.
