Video of this incredible race- One of the fastest if not the fastest last 400m ever run in any race and only race with two sub-50 last laps in a race 1500m and up.

Surely a Big 10 Championship 800 has been taken out in 70 seconds and closed in 47 seconds.
Ryun's 50.6 in a 3:38 race is more impressive. In fact his 50.8 running out in lane 3 at the '68 trials (http://track.isport.com/track-videos/play/jim-ryun-in-1968-olympic-trials-7547/) is more impressive. However, most impressive of all is the fact that neither Cram nor Gonzalez actually broke 50 in that race but somehow the story continues, lol. Cram's 50.9 at the 1982 Commonwealth Games is probably best of them all. He wasn't in top form in '87.

51.04 officially. But he did turn around to glare at someone for stepping on his heel, so give him a couple of tenths for that.

wonder what the fastest final lap in a womans 800 or 1500 is?
The last 400 of this race is not far off 50 flat.
Freeze the frame. It shows 2:55.20 for the leader at the bell. Czech athlete, or German? Fuelbrugge? Cram is a meter back on him. JLG very slightly further back. 2:55.40 is the closest I can freeze it for those guys.
Final time 3:45.45. That's at least a genuine 50.05 for JLG.
If we adopt ventolin's methodology and compute DVTT (tm) we can see that Cram ran wide around the entire bottom curve during the overtake. That's an extra 3 meters at least, worth easily 0.4 seconds at this speed. JLG not quite so much, he slid by on the inside.
All the same, 49.9 is within the ballpark for him.
