Actually, this happens all the time in language. Words originally mean one thing and eventually come to mean other things through common use, even if the common use is driven by misconception. Although "ironic" still carries its original, intended definition, it now also carries a definition synonymous with coincidental. This happens all the time in every language. My wife and I have the same name too.
But it's our last name and I never thought it was unique or ironic.
