I'm wondering what's better for me. My feet tend to hurt more when I train in more minimalist shoes but I hate running in big built up trainers because I always feel like my feet are carrying around a ton of weight.

I much prefer minimalist shoes.
One of the problems is that almost all running shoes these days have very soft soles, which don't provide much of any protection to the feet. Thinner soft soles provide even less protection to the feet.
Minimalist shoes, with very hard rubber soles would be best.
I run in a pair of Puma Yugorun. So I guess minimalistic.

Have you stopped beating your wife?
Train in clunkers for the majority of slow and long runs. Train in lighter flats etc once a week for speedwork.
