The old Speedstar II shoes gave me problems after a while. Other than the heel counter those were my favorite shoes for long runs.

THIS JUST IN: HARD HEEL COUNTERS CAN RUB YOUR ACHILLES. NEWS AT 11.
If you have a bursitis or haglunds deformity, a rigid plastic heel counter will likely irritate your achilles. I've been more comfortable in shoes with a softer or more flexible heel counter. You might try the Asics DS Trainer with the new heel clutching system.
Yes, absolutely. Hard and/or tight heel counters can very much irritate the Achilles tendon, and make healing a sore Achilles very difficult.
Find shoes that don't bug your Achilles, or just take a knife and begin cutting away bit that don't work for you.
It seems to me that too few people are OK with modifying their shoes to make them work better for them. I knife up more than half of my running shoes, and am much happier for it.
Those heel counters don't just irritate the bursitis- they CAUSE it!

today I went on a run in some new shoes (Puma fass 250, flats) that have a very simple heel structure made up of just cloth, you can literally push the back of the heel down with your finger.
That sounds great. I'll look into getting a pair if they're cheap.
I have taken the thread puller, knife, scissors, gorilla tape, and whatever to running shoe heels many times.
