Pretty awesome fields. Would love to see Solinsky in that 10000 though.
Rupp? Solinsky?
What the F. Why is Abdi the only American? This will easily be the fastest 10k ever run in the Americas, save Bekeles WR attempt or year or two ago. And it's right down the road from where most of our top guys are training. This will be a huge letdown if none of the best Americans get added to the field. Maybe Eugene is just slow rolling us...
Awesome fields! 4 guys with prs under 26:40.
Z. Tadese never disappoints (outside the marathon, that is) and is one of the few runners that seems to be able to run fast times without needing rabbits to take him 3/4 of the way.
Too bad the Americans don't want to compete with the best. If not here, where are Solinsky & Rupp going to get their A standards?
Three 10,000 on the track during one season is a recipe for disaster. Which race would you like Rupp or Solinsky to skip?
Pre--USATF--World Championships?
3 10ks over the span of 3 months is a disaster? Are you kidding? Its a 10k, not a marathon.
So you're saying Rupp should run a sit and kick 10k at USATFs (which won't take that much out of him) and the World Champs 10k and that's it? You're crazy man.
This is on his home turf, his backyard! I know people don't like Rupp... but he is a racer. There are few high quality 10ks anymore... next to none. Its awesome that Pre is stepping up. Rupp clearly loves to compete against the best. He wants Solinsky's record. How he is not in that race is beyond me. Only thing I can think of is he is hurt or will be a late entry so that the organizers can make a "splash" about it.
As for Abdi, is he rabbiting? That was my impression.

Rupp is a marathoner now - he is probably on a stretched out marathon program for 2012.
You tell me - he makes both Olympic teams - 10k and marathon - which should he do? An inexperienced 27 flat 10k guy without a world class kick would likely take, oh, 10th in London. But a fresh-legged 2:08 marathoner has as good a shot as anyone at a London medal.

I thought that Solinsky was running the 5000 this year at World Champs and would then be focusing on the 10000 next year for the Olympics. If I am wrong on that please correct me but if that is the case this race at Pre makes a lot of sense. He is unproven against top competition and he could get some this year without racing the event in the World Championships.
A 2:08 marathoner has no shot at a medal in London. Did you watch 2008? Have you followed marathon running the last few years?
the marathon is different - much more luck involved than in other races. Anything can happen. Bronze medal at Beijing was won in 2:10. bronze at athens was 2:12xPoint is, on a given day, the best guy may win a marathon, but after that the odds are scrambled and unpredictable. in a 10,000 the favorites will usually be in the medals.

So is this going to be a disaster for Tadese, Merga, Tanui, Kogo, Ebuya etc.?

Exactly. Spare me all the talk of how it will ruin our guys to actually get out there and compete more than a handful of times a year. I understand that they want to do well at Worlds, but this is going to be the best 10K ever run in the United States, and it is going to happen right in our best guys' backyard. This is ridiculous.
Solinsky has always been hyper-selective about races. But I cannot understand why Rupp would skip out on a stacked field at his home track at Oregon. At the very least, he could take a shot at the AR.
I remember seeing some interview with Rupp or Salazar where they said Rupp is doing the two mile at Pre because they think it is too close to the national championships to sufficiently recover in time to be sure he makes the world team.

three 10000 races might (might) be too much if they were all three all-out, non-championship style races, and if R&S had to be fully sharp for all three, but that's simply not the case.
But anyway, I didn't mean to help turn this thread into a 'lets bash american runners' thread. Its possible that this race just didn't fit into their training/racing schedule as they'd planned it. My point is more that not taking opportunities to run races like this is bad for them, career-wise, and maybe they should reconsider how they plan their seasons so that they can get into races like this one.
Still, despite the absence of the americans, this race has potential to be a great one. I hope sileshi is in good shape!

to be fair, USAs are just a few weeks after Pre.
Those African guys may not have a top-3-or-stay-home wc trial situation 3 weeks later.
Yeah, with the US champ just a few weeks after it makes sense they wouldn't run it. But I imagine Rupp and Solinsky will be running in one of the shorter distance events.

I would like to see Rupp run as well, but 3 10Ks that are 'all out efforts' in a period of 3 months is a lot for someone in Rupps situation. It would not be a lot if he was a legit sub-27 guy and you are just running for a pay day in sit and kick type races, buy in Rupps case, it has to be an all out effort just to be competitive with the Africans. However, in this case, there is enough time before USA trials, which will not be an all out effort. Rupp, Ritz and Solinski are so ahead of everyone else in the US that they can run at a 27:30 pace and drop a 2:00 flat for the last 800 and drop everyone else.
