Bowerman Pack at Hayward Field Trying to Make Track Popular With Students

Here's an interesting article on the "Bowerman Pack" which is a student section at the U of O home meets. The desire is to make track and field popular for students of the university. Three cheers for Oregon giving this a shot. The vast majority of track meets make zero attempt to entertain fans so I'm really glad they are doing this but I guess Oregon is different as they had over 5000 fans at the Pepsi meet this weekend.

So for anyone at the meet? How was the Bowerman pack? What else is the school doing to make meets entertaining? Pro sports figured out they are in the entertainment business a long time ago.

I wasn't at the meet instead I ended up watching it on TV as a majority of their home meets are on the local cable (comcast). The did devote a few minutes of the broadcast to the "bowerman pack".

I do remember them last year near the plaza entrance but it looked more like a group of college students just laying around in the one section that allowed them to bask in the sun while at the meet. So, I think it is a much better location this year if they are looking to drum up more student support.

Not convinced it is going to work and not sure that it is the most track savvy group either but I guess as long as they are there (savvy or not) it is a good thing for the sport.

After having listen to Vin talk to groups numerous times this all seems to be in line with his main talking point. Which is building a fan base which will carry the sport to a new level. Here in Eugene this means the younger fans since it is the older group that has really been keeping it alive for so long.

They showed nice enthusiasm and definitely were more involved than the group was last year.
