"NYAHURURU, Kenya Feb 23 (Reuters Life!) - Kenya's Olympic marathon champion Samuel Wanjiru heaved a sigh of relief on Wednesday when his wife Triza Njeri withdrew her accusation of attempted murder against him in court.
Njeri withdrew her accusation against the top athlete -- a former London City and Chicago marathon winner -- and told a Kenyan court that they had resolved their differences.
When she took the witness box to testify, Njeri told Senior Resident Magistrate Alice Mong'are that she did not wish to proceed with charges against Wanjiru.
Also withdrawing his complaints against Wanjiru was William Masinde, the family's night guard, who had filed an assault charge against the 2008 Beijing Olympic Marathon champion. Wanjiru had been charged on December 30, last year at his residence in Nyahururu he threatened to kill Njeri and Masinde.
He also had an alternative charge of assaulting the guard.
But while Njeri and Masinde withdrew their complaints, Wanjiru will have to wait longer to know his fate on another charge of being in possession of an illegal firearm, an AK assault rifle.
On this charge, the prosecutor John Ruto told the magistrate that he was awaiting further instructions from the Criminal Investigations Department, and appealed for a mention date.
But the magistrate ruled that the case be heard on May 15, this year.
"I have come here to tell the court that we have resolved our differences. Our matters will be settled out of the courtrooms,? said Njeri.
Wanjiru and Njeri entered the courtroom hand in hand, occasionally acknowledging greetings from those in attendance."
