"The jogging boom has spawned huge industries to supply all the gear runners need and a great deal they don't need but which look nice, give the sweaty activity a touch of fashionable class and make their designers and manufacturers comfortably rich....The point we are making is that paying several hundreds of dollars for the latest in hi-tech running shoes is no guarantee you'll avoid any of these injuries and can even guarantee that you will suffer from them in one form or another. The first thing to realize is that the less we interfere with the natural movement of the feet, the better we are going to perform...If you could just attach a rubber sole to your foot, with nothing on the top, you'd have the perfect running shoe." -Arthur Lydiard
"It becomes difficult to know who to believe when world famous atheltes endorse running shoes and are quoted as saying that these are the finest you can buy...a lot of them will promote a brand of shoe while actually running in shoes which are nothing like the ones you would buy."
-Arthur Lydiard
"Barefoot running on the proper surface would probably produce the best times."
-Jack Daniels
Two of the world's greatest coaches in history agree, barefoot is ideal. This is not to say that the transition should not be made slowly, to avoid injury. And of course complete barefoot running is probably not smart for most if it's not on soft surfaces. Yet still - this belief was held among experts long, long before Born to Run came out. The most important part of the Lydiard quote is why we should not trust shoe companies, or the athletes they sponsor. They are paying their athletes to promote their products. The fact that an individual can run fast does not make their claim scientifically valid.
