just posted this in another thread about mambas. The OP was a steepler:
"hope i can lend some help in on this.
I have both the matumbos and mambas.
For the matumbos, theyre pretty much what they're marketed for 5k-10k. I dont feel a lot of get up and go, the shoes are almost telling me to chill out and keep an even pace. Its not hard to get on my toes, but theyre more unresponsive than the milers, victories, and matumbos. They have a decent lock down (flywire ive had mediocre experiences with because i got the older versions of the vics/tumbos so the insole slips around on me alot even after i but in super glue), only drawback would be my insole thing that comes slippy slidey on tight turns or if im going faster (sub 70/400m).
For the mambas, i have run steeple in them and some other workouts so that is my point of reference. They are poppy, if you snowboard you know that some boards just have more "pop" and thats what the mamba has. It just feels like a solid spike. It has GREAT lock down. My foot didnt slide around at all and the midsole was thicker/sturdier than the vics so it seemed like a more comfortable experience (not saying the vics are comfortable, just that they are NOT as comfy as mambas. And they shouldnt be, in a mid distance race you need that extra weight taken off).
So, for you, i would go with the mambas. In HS the steeple is only 2000m if i remember correctly. The mamba is the new steeple shoe, and it would work perfectly as a two mile shoe as well (more agressive than the matumbo, less than the victory. Perfect balance). Any more questions just ask..."
However, i think the mamba has a better lock down (just because the insole problem on the victory i had). It def has more pop. And i started using victory XC's in practice because after too long in the track vics my arches hurt too. So i feel your pain. While i havent done any practices in the mambas long enough to see if my arch would hurt yet, i would suggest the victory XC's for workout spikes. Theyre light enough, durable as hell, and they have enough arch support to do whatever repeat lengths you want. (I've done up to 6xmile in them). Oh and you can use them for track and outside for grass repeats without a hitch. Hope that clears some stuff up
