I found the original Lunaracer's upper to be way too stiff, and actually dug into my ankles to the point of bleeding. Is the Lunaracer 2 upper any less stiff?

I've never run in the originals (only tried them on) because they were too narrow for me, but I've gone through two pairs of the 2s. For the most part, I would guess they are much less stiff. The heel area is more built up than the originals but mostly with foam padding. The heel doesn't have the flywire in the heel, and instead has a soft and flexible heel counter. If your only problem was bleeding ankles, they're worth a try.
If the rest of the upper gave you problems, I'd input that the mesh itself has some give, and seamless on the inside. The only part of the upper that gave me problems was the flywire's plastic casing. Normally it isn't an issue, but I once got some mud that dried on and it increased the stiffness of the midfoot wrap just enough that it gave me blisters until I cleaned off the mud. Not an issue normally but be aware the flywire layer isn't too flexible either.
