I'm looking at picking up a pair of trainers and flats for both training and running long distance events. Any recommendations? Thanks.

Agreed. I've run several 100 milers in racing flats because that's what I trained in. When doing ultras, comfort is more important than anything else as far as shoes go. If you can train high mileage in a pair of shoes, you can run an ultra in them. If you can't run high mileage, no shoe will feel good during an ultra.
