Um...Born to Run.
Read it recently and liked it a lot more than I thought I would. I'm not an ultra runner, but I very much enjoyed the descriptions of trail runs. McDougall's narrative gives one much to ponder.

yes, and I did not like it. I feel Mcdougall is a very talented writer with an agenda of self promotion. his characters are colorful adventurers. i have nothing against ultra runners but the book uses ultrarunning as the background to knock shoes, shoemaking, research the running industry in general. Mcdougall's writing is so convincing he has had incredible public presence. a soapbox figure if you will.
some of his statements are factually inaccurate, comments about Bill Bowerman running career as an example.
Read the book, be entertained but take it lightly.
Ah an oasis of meaningful discussion in the proverbial desert.
I am not sure how the 'agenda' would benefit him other than venting at his ow frustration of being injured often.
I will say the reference to Boston Qualification being elite is a little funny.
I agree about the Bowerman comments. Someone - cannot remember who, said something to the effect that he admits to not being completely accurate or not researching Bowerman enough - something to that effect.
Out of sheer curiosity - honestly, I would like to know how not pandering to shoe companies benefits him.
Thanks.
We need an official Born to Troll thread
I am currently reading this book. I think that the writer is very biased with his views towards barefoot running. There is no possible way that people like "us" who have been wearing shoes for their entire lives could change to barefoot running and benefit from it. It would lead to many other injuries because we have not grown up doing everything barefoot. These people have adapted their lives to living barefoot and running this way.
Although I do not agree with his views, I do however find the book very interesting and the way in which he writes.
I love that threads get self proclaimed as official.
I read it. I pretended it was a novel and enjoyed it immensely, except perhaps for some of the stuff about persistence hunting.
I agree it was an entertaining read. There is some merit to some of the things he says. There is also way to much speculation and hyperbole in what he says. I was actually fascinated by the concept of humans thriving as persistence hunters they way he put it forth - it has ZERO bearing on anyone who is a fitness/competitive runner in our modern world - but fascinating none the less.
I am enjoying trail running a lot more since reading it.
