Does anyone know what the current men's master mile record is? I might go for it if I get some spare time this winter.

Outdoors: Vyacheslav Shabunin RUS 4:01.62
Indoors: Eamonn Coghlan IRL 3:58.13
What are your credentials? These are not easy time to get at our age
Tony Young will run a (4:20.9) mile if he stay in shape.
I'm pretty sure that technically, Coughlin's time is not the record because it was not run in a master's only race. Someone else may eb more up to date on that.
Didn't Larry Almberg run close to 4 a few years ago? Guess it's more than a few now ....
I was pretty consistently in the 4:20's during college and I've been doing crossfit for 6 months now...my last time trial tells me that I can do it. Also, my crossfit guy thinks I can do it.
I just have to drop a few pounds and get back on the horse!!!!!!!!!!!!

No it is is considered the record
http://world-masters-athletics.org/records/indoor-menNot that it really matters but its "Coghlan", not "Coughlin"
Crossfit is incredibly helpful for milers. El g used a variation of it.
And Webb is about to do a commercial on how CrossFit has led to his current success.
Sooo... You ran 4:20 about 20 years ago. Now you've been doing some fad called crossfit for 6 months and think you are going to run sub 4? Good luck with that.
Not sure, but I think Jim Sorensen is the fastest American miler right now. Took a good crack at sub-4 as a 40yo a few years ago and still running well, but likely has aged away from sub-4. Even Vyacheslav Shabunin, who was an elite mid-distance guy in his 20s and 30s and setting world records this year has not cracked 4 as a master yet.
Sub 4 at 40+ is just a little easier than impossible.
Thanks.
Looks like you better have run a sub-3:50 as a youth to have a chance at sub-4 after 40. Note that most of the guys below trained without substantial break from their elite days right into their 40s.
From Masterstrack.com (http://masterstrack.com/2010/08/15208/) A list of top 40+ milers:
3:58.15i Eamonn Coghlan (41) PR - 3:49.78
4:01.62 Vyacheslav Shabunin (40) PR - 3:49.83
4:02.53 David Moorcroft(40) PR - 3:49.34
4:04.98 Jim Sorensen (40) - PR 3:56.08 (converted 3:38.65 1500)
4:05.51i Tony Young (42) - PR 4:00.8 (Likely ran a faster paced 1500)
4:06.7?? Larry Almberg (43) - PR ?
I think Tony ran that mile on a 300 meter track.

It's Coghlan, not Coughlin.
This must be a US attitude. I was looking around on masterstrack.com and came across this truly amazing observation, that the fastest 1500 run by an M30 this year was 4:01. I thought, what about Bernard Lagat?
In the UK the masters' rankings are obtained by a simple database query out of all competition results. Most peoples' best performances will come in open races because there are more open races to run in, with more depth. And the old guys are not always last to cross the line.
By the same logic, we ought to ignore all womens' marathon performances run in mixed races.
Here's one possibly relevant data set: I ran 4:19 open (admittedly, I was more of a quarter/half-miler at the time) and 4:39 as a master, with no breaks in training, no weight gain, and no significant injuries.
Too bad I didn\'t know about crossfit...
We do not like black master runners at all!!
Old Miler how old are you and what can you run today?

Sorensen would have had a good crack at sub-40 at 40. But, and Oregon race director wouldn't let him into a high quality field. Most likely because Sorensen would have beaten the field.

Not it really mustn't.

How is that the same logic? We are talking about a track record, not a road record. Do you know of any women's track records set in races with men?
Even AIMS distinguishes the women's record set in a women's only race from the one set in a mixed race. That must be a Brit attitude.
