Has anyone else ever been in this situation? I ran unattached and beat 5 of the 7 guys from my school in the race. The coach won't let me walk on. The guys in the race were the C team guys.

transfer schools, sounds like the coach isnt a great coach to be able to manage talent
Can I interest you in a kleenex?
you'd be the 3rd man on the c-team? that puts you at about 17th on the team. Unless you are a true frosh with good track times there is really no reason he should put you on the team. sorry

You beat 5 of the 7 guys on the C team. That does not mean much. The guys on a C team are often 800 runners, just coming back from injury, not doing any speed work, etc. etc.
Keep working hard, keep improving. Politely ask the coach if you can "show" him you deserve a spot and can contribute to the program. Maybe the next semester or next year he'll let you on.

You have no idea what the team did leading up to this race and the coach has no idea what you did. The team is probably training very hard at this time of year and you may have rested up specifically for this race just to be their C team runners. It make sense that he isn't letting you on the team based on one early season race. Keep working hard and show the coach in more than one race that you are better than some of his runners.
id transfer schools, preferably to a school that is their competitor. in the meantime get a coach and/or train with a local track club or something

If true the coach is a douche. Track and field can't afford coaches turning away any athletes.

I've heard about some schools that don't allow any walk-ons whatsoever, no matter how good they are; it has to do with Title IX and managing number of guys on the team. So not necessarily the coach being a dick. His hands may be tied by his AD/Administration.

This is the correct answer
ive seen the same thing happen at some big D1 schools, they have a small roster with middle distance punks doing XC who dont run that quick for 8K
yeah, it sucks if they dont let you walk on, because some D1s have like 2-3 400-800m track guys on the XC roster but they run ~29-30+minutes for an 8k in a NCAA team issued Nike D1 uniform.
OP, is it a D1 school? Have you thought about transferring to one of the really good D2 or D3 programs? That's what I'd do.
Alright, so you beat 5 of the 7 guys on your college’s “C” team, which should make you the 17th fastest man overall.
Let me be clear that I am not being mean towards you, but giving you the reality of your situation. Right now, it seems like you can’t contribute anything to this college team (running wise). The college coach is probably looking for guys that can contribute to the team on a running standard (i.e. scoring points in meets, especially at conference or some other big meet).
Maybe if you’re a good motivator or a good team leader and the coach sees that, maybe you could get on the team not only as a runner, but as a guy who everyone likes and who is a good team supporter. Basically, if you have good leadership skills, maybe the coach could let you join, but I don’t know how this coach is or what this coach is looking for.
If you’re serious about running for a team, look at some other school where you’ll be a top runner for that team or a coach who’ll allow you to join as a walk on. If you don’t want to transfer, then continue to work hard and don’t give up. If you start getting better, then give it another shot with this coach, but if not, don’t give up running. If you really love to run, continue to do so; don’t let this coach or team make you give up something you love doing.
Most importantly, don't make this such a high priority as you're in college. Your education should come first before running.
Dude,
I would keep training and beat most of the B team next year. The following year when you start beating the A team and the idiot coach begs you to join the team, you can tell him to F*&%K OFF!!!!!

If running is important to you, DO make it a high priority. I graduated from a great academic school, took my coursework very seriously, but learned more from 4 years of running than I did from anything academic. \'Education\' is comprehensive, and given a good coach and program and your individual investment, running can be extremely formative as you grow up.
Things I learned from competitive running about character, work ethic, discipline, accountability, communication, etc. are what have really stuck with me post-college. Yes, you are in college for an education. But don\'t assume that just means books and tests and grades.
Did this team have tryouts? Did you go?
so here are some important points
-Title IX. Maybe he doesn't have any openings for you, even though he wants you.
-You beat C team guys. They're usually 400, 800 runners or sometimes even decathletes.
-maybe the coach is actually a real douchebag.if so transfer, unless you're actually going to the school for an education.

Absolutely...I know some coaches who bemoan the fact their admins force them to cut teams down to certain sizes to meet title IX restrictions. One found a way around it...the coach had one more girl than guy and the school asked him to cut 10 guys for title IX...he said if i get 10 more girls out, can I keep the guys?...Admin said yes, impressively.
I am a "C-Team" guy at a decent d1 school, and to be honest, you probably beat a bunch of 800 runners. that is what i am, and unattached runners beat me all the time at our home meets. i hate the fact that i have to do cross to stay in shape for indoors/outdoors, but some of us just have to do it. the guys you beat are probably (a) like me, or (b) coming back from injury... or in some cases, maybe even 4.0 students and/or guys whose parents donate a sh!t-ton of money to the school. in my three years, i have seen plenty of those guys stay on the roster. no offense man, but if running in school is that important to you, you should probably transfer to a college where you could do more than beat some c-team guys who most likely have upsides you are unaware of.
