So he leads as long as he can in every race. Doesn't matter if there are 15 minute guys in the race. My teammate will run ~5:00 first mile because he wants to race like a man. He says running any other way is chicken sh*t.

Some people like to go for the win every time they step on the track.
Sure, he'll probably end up running no better in the end, but at least he's TRYING to put himself in the race. I have no respect for people that sit back and lose long races in the first lap.
When I was in high school there was this one dude on another team that would take it out in under 60 for the first quarter in every high school cross country race we did. Ran like 18 something. I'm not kidding either. I'd go out in 5 minutes or so, and so probably like 68-70 for the first quarter. When I would hit the quarter I literally couldn't see the guy anymore. I usually caught him by a half mile or so.
well, he is racing like a man. sitting and kicking is actually kinda lame. maybe you should try his approach.
Nobody can coach desire, Pre.
And he dies HARD on the 2nd mile. He runs like a 5:50 for the 2nd mile.
Tell the dumbass to train like a badass like Pre did, and then maybe he could actually lead the race with a shot at winning it. Don't let him watch Without Limits again, either.
that would be cool if he could hold it for 2 miles

"Sit and kick" is not the only alternative to "go out way too hard and die." No one is saying that the kid should sit and kick. People are simply suggesting reasonable pacing.

That's because you are a Dumb Person.

You do realize that we're talking about XC here, right? XC is a team sport. You win XC races as a team by having each of your guys place as well as possible. If 23rd is the best place you can get, you put your team in a better position to win by placing 23rd than by going for the win and ending up limping home in 60th.
So, yeah, it sucks when guys lose the race in the first lap...by going out way too hard and falling apart.
That's Gerry Lindren!
He runs 17:50 which is reasonable enough
Maybe he can't run a 17:50 without busting a fast first mile, I don't see why everyone thinks that reasonable pacing works for everyone. Pre obviously couldn't do it why should other people conform to it?
"Running like Pre" doesn't require a certain PR - that's the whole freaking point.
steve p was so gay i hate kids like that i would kick his ass for sure i probably sleeps with without limits under his bed
I did the same thing my first two years of high school. Would go out in 4:50-5:00 and end up running 18:00 or so.
Well wouldn't you know that maturing and taking that desire and putting in more training had me running 15:10 for the 5k and 9:05 for 2 miles by my senior year.
Don't knock on someone for going balls out. It really doesn't hurt or help you at all.
Pre had the option of burning it from the start because he was top in the field and new it was going to hurt if people wanted to go wire to wire with him. A 17:50 runner going out in 5 against a group of runners who are more than a minute better than him won't really prove anything, and i am sure he could help the team more if he went out in 5:40 and maybe worked his way down, pick off some other runners so he could run 17:20ish and finish higher.

he said 17:50, not 13:50
1st race of a season while I was in high school, I was dumb enough to think I was in shape to keep up with the big boys. I clocked a 5:01 1st mile and was right beside Andrew Bumbalough (that was his slowest mile)
Surprised no one has suggested that he would hit the wall if he went out like Pre.
Oh, well.
