I've gone through about eight or nine pairs of the marathoners, and can usually squeeze about 1000-1200 miles out of them. Unfortunately, it looks like Nike has discontinued them. Any suggestions for similar shoes at a reasonable price?

The Nike Streak 3 is a great shoe. I used to run in a lot of marathoners but since they was discontinued i run in streak 3s
The Hyperspeeds had a similar feel to me.
The closest thing Nike has is probably the Lunaracer. The Asics Gel Tarther might be the closest thing to it on the market however.
All these people are idiots.
Short answer is that there is no suitable replacement for the marathoner.
What makes the marathoner unique is this:
1. Stiff sole
2. Extremely durable outsole
3. A little support, but not too much
4. Upper between a trainer and a flat
5. Small, but not non-existant heel-toe drop.
The streak 3s have super light upper, and the sole is different construction and blown rubber. I can wear through the sole of the streak 3 inside of an easy week.
Hyperspeeds are nothing like the marathoner. they are flexible, the upper is very racey and the heel/toe drop is different.
The lunar shoes are far too cushy or supportive (depending on the model) to be like 'thoners.
