I used to track shoe mileage and go for a new pair ~600 miles in. Went by feel this time and after the fact totaled it up to ~850. Clearly my criteria are flawed somewhere.
What do you look for that lets you know it's time for a new pair?

when my joints hurt
or when i start slipping because of no traction
or when one side of the bottom of the shoe is way more worn than the other causing it to lean in that direction
I usually get a new pair every 6 or 7 months, or about every 1500-2500 miles, give or take. I'll also get a new pair if I start to get tendinitis in my knees or my feet start hurting, but this almost never happens. Last pair of shoes I had I had to get rid of because they developed two giant wholes and my toes would occasionally come out.
socks get wet
I can feel my knees hurt a little bit, which doesn't happen normally. Also when the sole is worn down very far.
knees begin to ache.
about 500 miles per shoe.
Take the same shoe model new and push in on the bottoms of both in the same area. A worn out show will compress much easier.
