One can get homes for <$25k in Ironwood, MI. Check it out.
You can get homes for less than 100K (nice places) all over the US.
If it was good enough for Jim Ryun to set a world record in, it is good enough for you to live in!
I hear Compton is nice as well...
it has some nice run the 15k running portion of the triatlon course.
rancheria road.
a bike trail.
you can be mostly or all on dirt in these runs.
Nice 4 beds are around $175k, only 2 hrs from Hollywood/Burbank Airport, 2-4 hours to LAX depending on the time of day. That's a deal. Better deal than my $M home around Stanford, 30 mins from San Jose Airport, 1 hr from SFO. But what the hell do you do living in Bakersfield ?
'Damn I can pay cash for that today'
Typical thread where the sole aim is to boast
Bought a home in the Midwest, near a small D1 university. I'm literally 5 minutes away from everything I need, so I don't spend my life commuting.
Sure, I don't have an ocean view but I live in a conservative town where I can leave the doors unlocked when I leave the house. Mortgage is $800/month, and I can spend my free cash to travel wherever/whenever I want. Definitely not a slave to my possessions.
Eww, a conservative town ;-( Who wants to live in Naziville where you live. Why do you guys hate Muslims, Jews, Mexicans, Blacks, Asians, and Mongloid Eastern Europeans.
Well, there are tradeoffs to the inexpensive home! Conservative is good when you're raising kids. It's safe. On the other hand, the city often feels like it's stuck in 1970. Either way, I'll have the home paid off in 15 years. That frees up a lot of cash in a couple of years.
"Damn I can pay cash for that today but who wants to live in Bakersfield ?"
Thinly veiled brag.

http://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-search/Bakersfield_CA/price-na-100000?sby=1As was said earlier, lots of nice places to live in the US now where you can buy a decent home for under $100,000.

I live in what most would consider a liberal town. It has a very low crime rate and was ranked by Money Magazine as one of the best places to live in America. Virtually all children in town attend the public schools. The average average SAT score for the most recent year I could find easily (2006) was 602/634/599 (Reading/Math/Writing)
I'll take this over any conservative town.

Maybe I chose my words poorly. When I say "conservative", I don't mean it in a political sense. I mean that the town is stable. I often say that the city is a generation behind--for better or worse. Things don't change quickly here, which is a blessing and a curse.
The danger of raising your kids in a conservative town is that your kids could get . . . conservative . . . which is far more dangerous than getting mugged.

Dude, we're not talking about a nice place to live, we're talking about Bakersfield. No jobs, crap weather, nothing to do...no one wants to live there, which is why prices are so low.
Same thing with Michigan, Cleveland, Arizona, and all the other "bargains" around the country: NO ONE WANTS TO LIVE THERE. Simple supply and demand.
Doesn't Eddy Lee go to Cal-State Bakersfield?

Well, I will agree with you in some ways that the prices of homes is less where people don't really want to live (I mean that HAS to be true), BUT where you want to live depends mostly on your lot in life.
For example, if I'm retired, I couldn't give a crap about whether there are jobs...as long as I'm not living in a very run down area that is full of crime, I don't care if I can get a job or not.
Also, the weather in Bakersfield is awesome as far as I'm concerned; high 90s in the summer as averages and mid 50s in the winter. Awesome.
Plus, if I'm retired and living in Bakerfield, I'm less than 2 hours from Los Angeles, 2.5 hours from Santa Barbara, just about 4 hours (a morning of driving) from Las Vegas, and man if you can't find something to do in California or Nevada, then you're not very imaginative.
Parts of Michigan too, while I wouldn't want to live there because it's too cold in the winter, are beautiful, and there's tons to do outside in that state. Cleveland isn't that great, but even there, you're close to Lake Erie, Canada, lots of state parks, professional sports, lots of dining options with live music...you can always find stuff to do.
Arizona though brother...man, there's a TON to do there, unless you can't stand the heat at all...great hiking, mountains, desert, grand canyon, lots of wild life, and no snow and no grass to mow.
Houses are cheap most places because of over building and the housing bubble. There are VERY nice places to live for very cheap right now if you are in a situation to be able to live there. I'd move to Arizona today if my kids were done with high school, but they aren't, so I'll wait. Hopefully I can still get a good deal when the time is here. If my house stays the same price relative to the homes I'd buy in Arizona, then I'll be happy.

Shows once again how little you know about everything. Bakersfield air quality is consistently top-five worst in the nation, and in some years it leads. What a paradise!

Air quality is different than weather brother. Air quality has to be considered of course and it is one of the reasons for me that parts of Arizona have to be nixed, but NOT because of the weather.
